Arrive: 3rd November 2008

Depart: 23rd November 2008

This is a three-week group programme to introduce people to international volunteering.

It should be enough time to learn whether volunteering is something that you might like to pursue for a longer period in the future. Other people, in the small group, may come from other EIL Federation countries. English will be the main operating language for this group.

This is not a tourist programme, although you will of course have opportunities to see sites of interest during your stay. Anyone applying for this programme should expect to spend time helping out with projects and meeting local people, as well as learning about South African culture.

  • Based in and around Cape Town.
  • Arrival orientation
  • Community volunteer placement (including some weekend excursion days)
  • Debriefing

Theme

The South African Programme is focused around a specific theme - an Educational Volunteering opportunity. The theme, `SHARE`, includes:

  • Sharing of culture
  • Sharing of information, knowledge and skills
  • Sharing of experiences
  • Sharing of time, resources and ultimately yourself

Outcomes based programme

The SHARE programme aims to equip participants with an overview of South Africa, emphasising both its challenges and positive aspects. It will also give participants an opportunity to make a difference in a local community.

The community placement component would focus on certain aspects of community development. These areas tie in with the UN Millennium Goals as outlined below:

  • Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
  • Achieve Universal Primary Education
  • Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
  • Reduce Child Mortality (by two-thirds)
  • Improve Maternal Health
  • Halt and Start Reversing the Spread of HIV/AIDS, and Other Major Diseases
  • Ensure Environmental Sustainability
  • Develop A Global Partnership for Development
